Summer is the perfect time to enjoy a backyard pool or even a community pool but it’s also one of the most dangerous times. It’s important to know the safety tips and enforce them especially with small children. Here are some great tips and safety guidelines to keep in mind if you have a backyard pool or you will be around pools this summer.

No diving in shallow water. Any diving needs to happen in at least 10 to 12 foot depth of water and if there is no lifeguard on duty or diving boards it’s best just to stay away from diving altogether.

No rough horseplay with small children or with small children present.
Breath-holding contests, throwing and rough-housing or chicken fights on the shoulders of others can only lead to problems especially with small children or if there are small children in the pool nearby. A simple fall can knock a child under the water and cause them to swallow water or breathe in the water.

Don’t play with drains and filter settings. Many of the equipment and accessories needed for pools can be dangerous if not maintained correctly. It’s best to keep fingers, hair, and toys away from drains and filters as much is possible. It’s also best to clean up toys in any items floating in the pool once playtime is over.

Remember adult supervision. Having adults or responsible older teenagers is always a smart idea especially with smaller children. Keeping a close eye on kids while playing in the pool or even being in the pool with them great fat added safety if something should happen unexpectedly and urgently. Make sure you can hear all the activity going on around the pool. You never know when you might not here someone drowning, since it is a very silent procedure, when you have your ear buds in listening to music.

No running. Of course, this is one of the most common requests at community and city pools but so many slips on hard surfaces and tile flooring can really add to Bruce’s, bumps and major injuries. Be sure to walk and stay safe around a pool.
