Electronics
This of course is an obvious one. Electronics and water do not mix. There are many pool friendly wireless speakers on the market today, but not all of these products are of the same quality. Very few of these speakers are actually waterproof, read the fine print and you will see that they are water resistant. They will hold up to splashing while sitting near the pool, but they really are not made to be in the pool and being dropped in the pool could ruin the speaker and cause a safety hazard.
Un-supervised Children
Another obvious one that we hear warnings about all the time, but is always worth repeating. Even if your young children are the strongest of swimmers something can still go wrong. It is a common temptation of home pool owners to let their kids go hop in the pool, especially when they can be seen by one of the windows inside the home. Children should be watched closely at all times that they are in the pool. Many unfortunate accidents have occurred with in-direct supervision.
Un-supervised Pets
Many types of dog breeds love to swim. It is also a huge temptation to let furry family members come and go from the swimming pool as they please. Even if your pet loves to swim and swim well there is potential for accidents to happen.
Many people also debate over whether letting pets swim in the pool is good for the pool itself. The answer to this is that letting your pet swim frequently will take a toll on your pool. Breeds that shed can send a lot of hair into the filters and clog them. If your dog jumps in dirty from playing outside all of that will be in your pool.
Our advice on letting your pooch in the pool? Give them a quick rinse off and make sure they are able to get out of the pool on their own (ramps). Also limit their swimming time because the chlorine and chemicals can irritate their skin with too much exposure.
Un-showered Bodies
We all hear this and see the signs posted all around public swimming pools to shower before entering the pool, but most people ignore this. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to just hop in the pool without rinsing off, but it really is a big deal. Un-washed bodies harbor a large amount of items that contaminate and throw off the chemical balance of your pool. This is the leading source of pool-caught illness in public pools.
Everyday Street Clothes
Didn’t bring your suit or it’s in the laundry? No problem, just hop on in in your t-shirt and shorts. This is not a good idea for a few different reasons. The chemicals in the pool can damage your clothes, certain fabrics absorb a large amount of chemicals depleting the pool, too many street clothes in the pool means fibers caught in the filters. Cut-off jean shorts are the absolute worst thing you can wear in a pool. The cotton fibers suck up pool chemicals more than any other fabric and the exposed and tattered fibers will easily break away from the garment in the pool and go straight to the filter. Wearing street clothes in your personal pool is okay every great once in a while, but it should not be done on a regular basis.
Toys that Have Been Left Outside
Pool toys are a great way to enjoy the pool, but they should be properly stored when not in use. Toys should be stored in a clean airtight or at least closed bin to keep bugs and dirt out. Toys left outside harbor dirt and bugs that end up in your pool. Some pool noodles left on the side of homes during hot summer months have even become homes for snakes.
Too Many Chemicals/ The Wrong Chemicals
It is very easy to add the wrong chemicals or too many to the pool water if you are not knowledgeable of pools and pool care/maintenance. If you are savvy to keeping your home pool clean and balanced there is still the chance th at something can occur to cause problems. Don’t try to fix the problem on your own without asking for advice. If you are unable to give your home pool constant monitoring and attention it is best to hire a professional to come in and check the condition of your pool water on a regular basis to keep it clean and healthy for swimming.
