Most common pool accidents and how to avoid them

Pool accidents can often be inevitable, however, luckily there are easy ways to help limit the risks of an unforeseen accident from occuring. The hot summer is a perfect time to go swimming with buddies. Many people spend countless hours dipping in the pool. Sadly, this fun activity can become a disaster due to accidents in the pool area. The pool can cause many injuries, which you can avoid with the proper knowledge.

There are five most common pool accidents, such as;

Slips and falls are very common around the pool area. The tile used to construct the pool can become slippery because it is wet, and anyone can slip and fall on the deck. Most pool warnings advise swimmers not to run on the pool deck, but that doesn’t stop people from falling occasionally.

Drowning is another common pool accident for swimmers. Some pool visitors have no swimming knowledge. Slips and falls are causes of drowning as a person may fall in the pool with no one to help.

Pool filters and drain use up to 300 psi to generate adequately for pools. The filter or drain power is strong enough to pull a swimmer and cause injuries, and while not a common pool accident, you should always have a plan in place.

Electrocutions result from using power equipment near the pool. Electrical pool equipment can become faulty and accidentally enters the pool, causing injuries or death.

Infections. Infection is not considered by most as a swimming injury. However, a dirty pool with chlorinated bacteria can taint the water, causing sickness to swimmers.

Prevention

Pool Fencing

Pool fencing is a strict law in some cities, though with different specifications. Generally, a pool fence is about four to five feet tall to keep kids and animals away from the pool deck. Over 400 children have died due to pool drowning or hot tubes annually. This report has made drowning the number one cause of accidental death of kids between one to four years. The law holds the pool owner responsible for an accident around the pool area. So build a fence to prevent people from accessing the pool area and reduce the risk of children falling and drowning in your pool.

Supervision – Pool Watchers

The law does not permit unsupervised swimming activities which is an easy way for pool accidents to occur. It states children and adults should not be allowed to swim without a buddy, even when the person is an expert. The pool owners should have a supervisor around who is a swimming expert, focuses on the swimmers, and knows CPR. Pools should also have floats and floating devices for newbies and kids, and ensure your supervisor is on-site whenever there is a swimming activity. The supervisor should be all focused on the pool to prevent the risk.

Fall Risks

The area around the pool is usually wet, making them slippery, and thus, leading to pool accidents. Swimmers should walk cautiously to prevent accidents because a fall close to the pool can lead to drowning, especially among kids with no floating equipment. Using paint with grit to texture the pool deck is advisable, and remember to clean the clutter.
