What Happens if Your Pool Fountain Freezes?

Frozen pool fountains is a common concern amongst homeowners. Winter is extremely cold, and many loathe it. However, the weather leads to frozen pools piling up many pool problems. Frozen pools are a serious problem that needs immediate attention because they can rip the water pipe, damage equipment, and freeze the water. In addition, the damages it caused take huge dollars to repair. However, these damages are what happens when your pool fountain freezes. Read on to learn more.

Signs That You Might Have a Frozen Pool Fountain

Leaking water

Leaking water is a common concern on frozen pool fountains. After freezing, the pipe might crack or break in the pool system because of the frozen water. The frozen water in the pipes leads to expansion and, in time, increases in force, eventually leading to split pipes, brake pump, filter, crack, and damaged heater. Although there is ground insulation, the underground system provides little support during the colder months and not for long.

Frozen pool pump

When your pool fountain freezes, it will damage your pump. The freezing blocks the pipe leading to several cracks, and you can notice that the pump no longer prime. The pump is responsible for drawing water from the pool; a tiny crack can stop it from functioning. Therefore, checking the pump after the ice melt is essential to ensure there is no crack because even a tiny crack makes the pump inoperable. Furthermore, you’ll have to replace the pump because cracks are beyond repair and eventually leak air.

Frozen pool filter

When the pool freezes, it damages the pool filter. The damage may take time to notice because the pool will still function normally and prime, and you won’t notice the bubbles or noise from the reverse moment of the water. However, you’ll encounter dampness or water leaking from the filter. When you see this sign, turn off the system and check the filter to see where it leaks. In a sand filter, the multiport valve is easily frozen, which you can notice by leaking water from the backwash pipe. This failure resulted from a damaged spoke gasket caused by frozen temperature. This temperature is likely to spoil the filter gauge.

Frozen pool deck

The frozen pool fountain also affects the pool deck. Removing frozen water and ice is difficult, leaving stagnant water or pool water around. When frozen water melts, it can be everywhere, causing cracks in the pool deck. The frozen water caused huge damage to the concrete. Many homeowners avoid this problem by expanding the joints and adding sealants to stop water from reaching the backside of the pool.

Frozen pool skimmer

You don’t want frozen water to reach your skimmer because it is easily frozen. In addition, the skimmer is constructed from PVC, and frozen water trapped in the equipment will expand it, leading to cracks. Thus, many homeowners winterize their skimmer by fortifying the Gizmo device, which looks like an empty pop bottle. The frozen water in the skimmer places stress on the Gizmo instead of outward, causing it to crack. However, if you have a damaged Gizzmo, you can use a bottle to replace the equipment in your skimmer.
