If you own a pool you probably know the basics to pool maintenance and keeping it clean- vacuuming, skimming, maintaining pH levels, changing the filters, etc. Or you may hire a quality service to care for these things on a regular basis. Here are some unique tips to help keep the task of cleaning the pool a little less laborious.
- Supercharge the Skimmer
Skimmers are great at filtering out bigger objects like leaves but there is a lot that still gets through. Have your skimmer filter more by using an old pair of pantyhose and wrapping it around the basket. Now tiny objects will stay in the basket, but remember the baskets will need to be emptied more often. Also skim the surface every few days for really large debris.
- Natural Bug Repellents
Bugs are a very big annoyance when it comes to pool cleaning. The best way to keep them out of the pool is with natural repellents around the pool. The added bonus is they won’t be bothering swimmers either. Plant some lemongrass near the pool, it has naturally occurring citronella on the skin which wards off mosquitoes. A brown paper bag filled with plastic grocery bags will work as a decoy wasp nest deterring wasps and hornets. They will not settle down in a place where a nest already exists.
- Throw in Some Tennis Balls
Beauty products like sunscreen, shampoo, lotions, and even naturally occurring body oils can build up and do a number to create grime in the water. Over time these products create gunk. Stick a few tennis balls in the pool or out of sight in the skimmer to absorb oily products and leave you with clearer water.
- Require Proper Swimming Attire
Say someone ends up in the pool with their clothes on because they forgot their suit, or you decide to get a little daring and have everyone jump in with their clothes on, maybe your sweet little niece has a sun sensitivity and wears a shirt to get a little more coverage. Once in a while regular clothes in the pool will not be a problem, but if it happens often it can be a cause of cloudy water. Regular clothing fibers break down easily and dyes can bleed upon contact with chlorine and can make the pool cloudy over time. The best way to combat this is to require that only swimwear is worn in the pool.
Pool maintenance doesn’t have to be an overbearing chore. Call in a dependable pool cleaning service to do the work for you.
